Greenwich considers 'safe zones'

GREENWICH — Greenwich is the latest Connecticut community to consider setting up child safety zones by banning registered sex offenders from certain areas of town.
Schools, parks, playgrounds and town beaches could be off-limits to registered sex offenders under the proposed ordinance.

The ordinance would create child safety zones in many places where minors are present and would allow police to issue tickets to registered sex offenders found loitering.

In late 2006, Danbury became the first municipality in the state to enact such an ordinance, which has been adopted by a few other communities, including Bristol.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut says such local laws could violate the Constitution and make it difficult for sex offenders who have served their time to re-assimilate into communities.
